Fenty Release 5-19: Rihanna's first Fenty collection

Fenty Realease 5-19: Rihanna's First Fenty Collection

In May 2019, Rihanna lauched her luxury fashion house known as Fenty under LVMH (Moet Hennesy-Louis Vuitton). Rihanna is known in the worlds of fashion and music as one of the best dressed music aritsts in all occasions whether it be the dinner, or the Met Gala.

With the knowledge that Rihanna presents herself as a very stylish and fashionable character, many were expecting her collection to mirror her style.
The collection is a curation of simple designs often mirroring outfits that Rihanna has worn before. A staple piece in the collection is the Denim Pleated Pants. The jeans are made from Japanese denim (known to be quite expensive but very good quality), they have a loose fitting taper with a cinched waist and a pleated front.
As a woman who has gone from a very slim frame to a thicker build with more weight in the thigh, buttocks and bust areas we can see that Rihanna has gone for a pair of jeans that will accentuate the average woman's figure while fitting her thighs. Generally this silhouette is quite simple and effective.

The simplicity is both the advantage and pitfall of this collection. Most of the pieces are quite simple with few pieces that really set Maison Fenty apart from any other luxury brand. This however, is not a surprise. Although the fashion industry clearly shows that designers do not necessarily need formal training to be successful, Rihanna is neither a designer nor stylist and this shows through her collection. Personally, I assume Rihanna curated a collection of pieces that she drew inspiration from and gave her ideas to designers to execute her ideas. Unfortunately this means that some of the pieces in Release 5-19 are not very unique, in fact many seem reminiscent of outfits Rihanna had worn prior. In this sense, Rihanna needs to be careful because the outfits that she has worn were designed by other designers. Some of the denim pieces in the Fenty collection are very similar to denim looks that Rihanna had worn and therefore very similar to denim looks produced by other brands. Other than the issue of copying other brands Fenty has one more issue; pricing. With the knowledge that the pieces are very simple many consumers were not expecting prices of £840 for a suit jacket that is in no way unique from other blazers and suit jackets. In my opinion this is the worst issue with the new Fenty line. Luxury clothing is going to be expensive, that is very obvious, however, when the pieces are not very unique from other brands, consumers will not gravitate towards the collection. As a music artist, Rihanna might be able to rely on her fans to purchase pieces from her line but after reading comments made by fans about the line it looks like a lot of people cannot afford the prices.

In conclusion, Rihanna's Fenty Release 5-19 featured a collection of simple and straightfoward designs that mirrored Rihanna's personal style. It contained a couple of great pieces but the majority of the pieces weren't very unique from what had been released by other brands. Generally the collection was pretty basic.

Personally, I really liked the denim corset dresses. The style was similar to pieces produced by The Y Project, however, I thought the dress was like a change from traditional corset dresses with the length and material. Although less traditional they remain feminine and I think the corset shows that Rihanna can implement her personal style into a piece that is still fashion forward. Hopefully in the future, Fenty will produce pieces that are more unique and Rihanna will make a name for herself in the luxury fashion industry.
